How to Make Dollar Tree Valentine’s Gift Baskets for Under $10
Shopping for Valentine’s Day gifts for your kiddos doesn’t have to break the bank. You can head on over to Dollar Tree and build your own Valentine’s gift baskets for less than $10! From crafts to coloring books to toys to candy, you’ll find perfect inexpensive items that your kids will adore.
Here’s a quick glimpse at the baskets I made (including what I put in them and how much I spent), along with a step-by-step guide to how to do this on your own!
DIY Dollar Tree Valentine’s Gift Baskets
Here are the gift baskets I made, along with the financial breakdown for each. Note that I did already have a big bunch of tissue paper at home, so I used one piece of white tissue paper in each. But you could easily skip the tissue paper, or buy a package of that too from Dollar Tree if you’d like.
Pink Valentine’s Day Basket
I paid for the pink container and the items that went in it, which included:
- Red stuffed monkey
- Unicorn coloring book
- Crayola crayons
- Unicorn bead kit (to make bracelets, necklaces, etc)
- Smarties candies
- Heart shaped glasses

- Watercolor paint set
- Sketch pad
- Book about weather
- Silly straws (heart shaped)
- Bag of lollipops
- Hot wheels car

Ready to make your own? Here’s a helpful step-by-step guide…
Step 1: Set a budget
It’s easy to get carried away when shopping at Dollar Tree, tossing lots of items into your basket. Plus, that extra quarter (yep, everything at Dollar Tree is now $1.25) now adds up across lots of items!
Set a budget before you even walk into the store. You can make adorable baskets for under $10 each. For example, you might choose…
- 1 basket + 4 items = $6.25
- 1 basket + 5 items = $7.50
- 1 basket + 6 items = $8.75
- 1 basket + 7 items = $10
Step 2: Browse the Valentine’s Day Section
Dollar Tree always has a section of the store that’s geared towards upcoming holidays, so you’ll find some Valentine’s specific items like candies, stuffed animals, little toys, and other trinkets.
I think it’s always fun to get at least one item that reminds me specifically of Valentine’s Day. For example, my pink gift basket included heart shaped glasses and Valentine’s themed Smarties candy. My red gift basket included heart-shaped silly straws and Valentine’s lollipops.
Step 3: Browse the rest of the store
Here’s a key tip for Dollar Tree shopping – don’t limit yourself to the holiday section when building a holiday gift basket! Browse all the aisles to find gifts that your kids would enjoy.
For example, you could look for…
- Coloring books
- Art supplies
- Books to read
- DVDs
- Stickers
- Games
- Puzzles
- Non-holiday toys
- Non-holiday snacks and candies
You can see that many of the items in my baskets came from other aisles in the store, like the sketch pad, paint set, crayons, coloring book, hot wheels car, and more.
Aim to grab items that your kids will actually use – which will be different for everyone!
Step 4: Find a basket.
There are lots of different options for baskets, buckets, storage bins, and other containers that can corral items. I chose the festive Valentine’s Day buckets from Dollar Tree that had cute sayings like “Hearts and Hugs” and “Love You Always”. But maybe choosing a laundry basket is a more practical idea that your kiddo can then use in the room.
You can also peek around your house first to see if you have any extra buckets or baskets you could use, instead of spending the extra $1.25 here.
Choose what makes the most sense for you. I recommend doing this after deciding on the goodies for the gift, because it can be helpful to see that before selecting the size basket that you need.
Step 5: Assemble the basket
Once you have all your items, it’s time to assemble everything. If you have tissue paper or that paper grass that sometimes comes in packages, use that to add a little fanciness to the basket.
Then just place the items in and arrange them so that you can see a little of everything. I like to try to make it look full and even.
